John Smith started his career in the private sector as a major projects lawyer initially at Clifford Chance in London for 7 years and then as a Partner leading the Major Projects team at Burges Salmon in Bristol working on major infrastructure projects for the public and private sectors including major power station projects, rail and accommodation projects. Since 2009 John has worked as a public servant in the West of England area – initially for 10 years as Chief Executive of the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner’s office and latterly as Director of Economy of Place at Bristol City Council since August 2021 and from April 2023 as interim Executive Director for Growth and Regeneration. John’s areas of responsibility in Bristol include major infrastructure delivery projects, delivering high quality new homes, employment opportunities and transport links and ensuring the Council meets its obligations around safety and operational services such as transport, housing and landlord services, parks and open spaces, libraries and flood risk management.
